Toileting Policy
TOILETING POLICY
- All students must be fully toilet trained to attend classes.
- No two children will be permitted to enter the toilet cubicle together - this is to ensure the child's privacy as well as their safety.
- A teacher or class assistant will always accompany young children to the toilet and wait outside the toilet door.
- Staff are unable to assist students while in the toilet. If they ask for help to wipe their bums or to pull up their pants, staff will simply stand at the door of the bathroom and talk them through the process.
- If a child has an accident during class, the staff member must treat the child in a sensitive and supportive way. A staff member will accompany them to the toilet and encourage him/her to change out of the wet clothes and into dry clothes (All teachers have a supply of underwear, leggings / shorts and socks).
- If a child is asking for physical assistance to change, the following procedure is in place:
- One staff member / class assistant will enter the toilet cubicle to assist the child, making sure that the door is slightly open. A second staff member / class assistant will wait outside the door but must be in a position to see into the toilet cubicle. One or two staff members / class assistant can never be with a child inside the toilet cubicle with the door closed. This is for both the child and staff members' protection. For classes where only one teacher is present they cannot change the child themselves. In this situation a parent /guardian will be called immediately.
- If a child becomes very upset after he/she has a toileting accident and a staff member can clearly see that the child needs their parent/guardian, the staff member must make contact.
- Wet/soiled clothes will be put in a plastic bag and parents will be informed of what has happened when they collect their child. Parents are asked to return the clothes given to their child, washed and folded.
